A glimmering of images – an oscillation between light and shadow. Rhythm and movement merge into a nocturnal diary of dreams and nightmares, delving into the depths of human connection and revealing moments of tenderness and vulnerability, as well as aggression, conflict, and fear.
Goldberg is a masterpiece by Goyo Montero – a deeply poetic yet powerful and virtuosic declaration of love for dance. With this work, the Spanish choreographer and ballet director introduces his newly formed company for the first time to audiences in his hometown of Madrid: the Staatsballett Hannover, an ensemble of 28 exceptional dance artists.
Inspired by a musical marvel – Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 – Montero intertwines Bach’s score with new compositions by Canadian Owen Belton, creating a shimmering soundscape. There is no linear plot, no single “hero,” but rather a series of counterpoints formed through solos, duets, trios, and ensemble pieces. Theme and variations, transformation and return give the sequence of scenes its structure. At the end, we awaken from a dream – changed and moved, and still resonating with its echoes.
