The film director and audiovisual artist Yu Depeng is one of the precursors of video art, performance art and contemporary theatre with social content in the underground scene of northern China. A graduate from the Beijing Film Academy (BFA), his early work has been showcased in a retrospective exhibition in China’s capital.
Straddling both film and video creation, since 2006 he has been investigating the boundaries of audiovisual art and he has exhibited his work in such Spanish centres of contemporary creation as Ars Santa Mónica Barcelona and Matadero Madrid. At the same time, he has taken up artistic residencies in various European cities and he is currently working and living in both Beijing and Europe.
Yu Depeng has come to Madrid to present his last film, created during a residency in Naves Matadero. Stray dog is a hybrid audiovisual project, as are its protagonists who belong to Spain’s little-known Chinese community. This experimental film gives voice to the story of a social group far from its Chinese roots that dwells in an intermediate space, the second generation born to the Chinese families who arrived here in the 80s and 90s and who have grown up in cities such as Madrid. As the director explains: “As a self-exiled Chinese emigrant in Europe, my own status forces me to ask myself what it means to be Chinese and about the question of identity as far as a stateless person is concerned. By means of a period of documentation in the Chinese district of Usera and a series of interviews with representatives of this second generation of Chinese, I'm going to weave the story of their HISTORY”.
