Artificial intelligence companies buy millions of books to train their language models and then destroy them; privacy has slipped into fiction due to mass surveillance and social media; we believe we know what we like and need, but in reality, we are being guided by algorithms.
Is freedom a fallacy? Has free will vanished, stripping us of our autonomy? Have we been deprived of the power to decide? These core questions shape the theme of the 18th Sui Generis Madrid Festival: Neo-Fiction: New Narratives for a Contested Present.
To discuss and debate these issues, the 2026 edition brings together key figures in speculative literature from Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, Uruguay, and Venezuela, engaging in direct dialogue with Spanish authors.
In addition to the main theme, the festival will naturally cover timeless classics: horror, Gothic, and fantasy fiction. It will also host the 2nd Publishers' Gathering (II Encuentro de editores) and the 4th Speculative Fiction Book Fair (IV Feria del libro de géneros especulativos).
Organized by: Besarilia Cultural Association (Asociación Cultural Besarilia)
