SUMMER IN JAPAN

Three journeys to childhood, love, and summer afternoons

Japan and Spain share a secret: we both know that summer is much more than a season. It is an emotional territory, the perfect setting for adventure, melancholy, and transformation. Masters of Japanese animation have spent decades capturing this spell. In their stories, endless afternoons are synonymous with freedom, sunsets are a flicker of memory, and the air carries the scent of the extraordinary. Cineteca welcomes the holidays with three essential films by animation masters: Only Yesterday by Isao Takahata, co-founder of Studio Ghibli; Summer Wars by Mamoru Hosoda; and When Marnie Was There by Hiromasa Yonebayashi. Three journeys to childhood, to love, and to the bonds that sustain us during the endless afternoons of summer.
