TRIBUTE TO DIRECTOR JACINTO ESTEVA

A truly multifaceted figure — architect, painter, urban planner, and filmmaker —, Jacinto Esteva was one of the essential names of the Barcelona School. His perspective, as unclassifiable as it was radical, shifted between ethnographic documentary, the avant-garde, and a fascination with Africa that shaped a large part of his body of work. Cineteca celebrates the 90th anniversary of his birth with a tribute that surveys his main works and recovers restored materials, such as his footage shot in Africa: Mozambique, El arca de Noé (Noah's Ark), La ruta de los esclavos (The Slave Route), and La isla de las lágrimas (The Island of Tears). The programme continues with his early short films Notes sur l'émigration. Espagne 1960 (co-directed with Paolo Brunatto), a documentary on Spanish emigration to Switzerland, and Alrededor de las salinas (1962), a docudrama filmed in Ibiza that prefigures the motifs of his later work. Furthermore, we present his masterwork, Lejos de los árboles (1970), a fascinated and horrified journey through rural "deep Spain".
