The author situates the action some 40 miles from Los Angeles to tell us the story of the outcome of the rivalry between two brothers who represent, through their duality, the conflictive nature of human beings.

Both of them, Lee, a hustler, and Austin, a screenwriter, find themselves back in the family home where their current situation and their differences will thrust them headlong into a turbulent, destructive whirlwind as they attempt to come up with a film script together that could change their lives forever.

True West is a genuine black comedy in which Sam Shepard, marrying direct, imaginative and musical language with poetic prose and a perfectly pitched atmosphere, imbues both the story and the characters with a complexity and dramatic richness that will lead the audience to a cathartic and surreal ending.
