"Monsieur Ubu is an ignoble being, and for that very reason, he is quite similar (from the navel down) to ourselves."
Alfred Jarry, author of this quote, revolutionized the theater of his time by creating the character of Ubu—a caricature of one of his teachers and a personification of the lust for power. María Folguera presents a version of Ubu, that boorish buffoon determined to invade Poland, that hits closer to the times we live in.
Ubu Roi premiered in Paris in 1896. It tells the story of a man who sets out to conquer Poland at any cost and succeeds, only to manage his mandate horribly, enriching himself shamefully before fleeing just in time to avoid capture. Pshite! (or Mierdra), the famous word Ubu constantly exclaims, embodies the nonsensical personality of Jarry's characters, which paved the way for the Theatre of the Absurd.
María Folguera creates an original text based on this theatrical classic, bringing it into the present day. Revisiting the repertoire has always served as a way to understand contemporary society; all around us, we can recognize similar boors, power-hungry and utterly unscrupulous. Our problems remain the same, but we continue to laugh at them in the same way.
