UNE NUIT SUR LE MONT CHAUVE (NIGHT ON BALD MOUNTAIN)
Alexandre Alexeïeff, Claire Parker
Francia, 1933, 8’
En tiempos de los zares, hechiceras, encantadores y criaturas fantásticas se reunían durante el solsticio de verano en el Monte Calvo. Basada en la música de Modest Mussorsgky.

LE NEZ (THE NOSE)
Alexandre Alexeïeff, Claire Parker
Francia, 1963, 11’

This lecture-screening offers a dive into the films made on the pinscreen, from “Night on Bald Mountain” by Alexandre Alexeïeff and Claire Parker to Jacques Drouin, with a focus on the history of this technique.

L’Idée (Idea) (Berthold Bartosch, France, 1934, extrait) B&W
Under a starry sky, a man thinks. The luminous silhouette of a naked woman appears : this is the Idea.
Digital image and sound restoration carried out by the CNC, the Swiss Cinematheque and the Hiventy laboratories, from an original nitrate copy preserved and made available by the BFI, a scan carried out by the Swiss Cinematheque of an original nitrate copy from their collection and supplemented by a 35mm safety copy, belonging to the AFCA, rights holder of the film, and preserved by the CNC.

Une Nuit sur le Mont chauve (Night on Bald Mountain) (Alexandre Alexeïeff & Claire Parker, France, 1933. 8') B&W
In the time of the tsars, sorceresses, enchanters and fantastic creatures gathered during the summer solstice on Bald Mountain. Based on the music of Modest Mussorsgky.
Digital image and sound restoration carried out by the CNC from an original nitrate copy preserved and made available by the BFI and supplemented by an original nitrate copy preserved by the CNC.

Le Nez (The Nose) (Alexandre Alexeïeff & Claire Parker, Cinéma nouveau, 1963, 11'). B&W
A man finds a nose in his loaf of bread one morning. Based on the story by Nikolai Gogol.
Digital image and sound restoration carried out by the CNC. Scan 4k from original negative.

Le paysagiste (Mindscape) (Jacques Drouin, Canada, NFB, 1976. 7') B&W
A particularly creative example of the pinscreen animation technique, this film is about an artist who steps inside his painting and wanders about in a landscape peopled with symbols that trigger unexpected associations.

Empreintes (Imprints) (Jacques Drouin, Canada, NFB, 2004, 6') CL
In this short experimental film, animator Jacques Drouin explores and highlights both sides of Alexeïeff-Parker’s pinscreen. Led by the repeated harmonies of a rondo for harpsichord by François Couperin, the film shows the filmmaker hurling himself into a hand-to-hand tussle with his own favorite instrument. Positioning the camera and lighting to reveal the relief formed by the pins, Drouin continually pivots the screen so that the viewer can glimpse the images hidden behind this mysterious screen.
