Centre for Artists in Residence
The Centre for Artists in Residence (CRA), located in Nave 16 at Matadero Madrid, is a space where artists, musicians, educators and cultural agents reside and work, sharing their daily processes, research and creativity in a closed-door environment. From the outset, the CRA has embraced a multidisciplinary approach to production in order to explore all aspects of the challenges facing the world today, at a time when the boundaries between the different disciplines are becoming increasingly blurred.
The residencies provide the creators with a workspace, time, resources, and the opportunity to disconnect from everyday life and reflect on their practice. Far removed from any market-driven demands, the residencies free them from the pressure of an imminent exhibition. This freedom allows them to embark on new research, experiment, take risks and even make mistakes.
Given that one of the Centre’s main concerns is to provide support for the city’s creative fabric, the residency programme was initially established and officially consolidated in 2017 as the Centre for Artists in Residence, operating with its specific identity within Matadero Madrid. The exchange of research is fostered by providing each resident with their own workspace within the spacious, open-plan centre. Residents share all of the centre’s resources, such as the auditorium, the black box, the editing facilities, the kitchen and the so-called ‘dirty-work’ studios. As a result, a community emerges, bolstered by the CRA team members, guest mentors and the numerous professionals who visit the centre from time to time.
Throughout the year, the CRA organises activities that are open to the general public in an effort to share and give visibility to the residents’ creations and research. The Open Day, held three times a year, in March, June, and November, serves as their moment of greatest public visibility.
Each residency can last for a variable length of time - some run for three months, others a year. Access to residencies is via a public call for proposals, which are assessed by a committee of experts.
