Lisa Long
As part of her ongoing research project Multipolar Video Histories, Lisa’s proposal for this residency centers on investigating how artists in the context of Spain have utilized video to examine personal and political histories, explore questions of identity, and challenge prevailing notions of representation. Leading questions include: How has video been used to critically engage with structures of power and historical narratives in Spain and its former colonies? In what ways has video provided Spanish artists with the means to articulate their own stories? How do these developments manifest in existing collections of video and time-based art in contemporary Spain, whether held in private or public collections?
During her residency in Madrid, she plans to meet and interview artists from different generations working in video, but also collectors, curators, and academics active in the field, doing site visits in collections and archives.
BIO
Lisa Long (b. Oakland, California, resides in Berlin) is a curator specialized in contemporary and time-based art. Her curatorial practice is motivated by artists who critically engage with histories, representation, and identity, embracing subjectivity and ambiguity. Currently, Long serves as the Artistic Director of the Julia Stoschek Foundation in Berlin and Düsseldorf, where she has curated the program since 2018. Recent group exhibitions have explored how artists negotiate experiences of violence (A Fire in My Belly, 2021); envision formal and collective utopias (at dawn, 2022); and call upon the body in relation to the camera to disrupt the status quo (Unbound: Performance as Rupture, 2023). Long has also presented several solo exhibitions by artists for the first time in Germany, including Sophia Al-Maria, Meriem Bennani, Stephanie Comilang & Simon Speiser, Rindon Johnson, (LA)HORDE, WangShui, and Young-Jun Tak. She has written catalog essays and articles for institutions, galleries, and magazines, and has taught Curatorial Studies at Folkwang University in Essen. She holds an M.A. from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College and a B.A. in Art History and Musicology from the University of Cologne.
She is a beneficiary of the curatorial residency in collaboration with LOOP Barcelona.
