Maya Pita-Romero

Marañas que lamen mi piel (Tangles that Lick my Skin)

Maya Pita-Romero is the recipient of the call for an Artistic Production Residency organised by the Centre for Artists in Residence in collaboration with La Escocesa. Over the course of two months, Maya will develop the selected project “Tangles that Lick my Skin” in the facilities of La Escocesa in Barcelona.

“Tangles that Lick my Skin” explores the entangled relationships between the cultivation of cotton and the menstrual cycle. New ways of relating to the plants from which we obtain materials emerge from the legends, rituals and toxicity that surround them.

This project speculates on new forms of viscous care that transform normative communities. Punctured and drenched, these tangled webs are home to creatures that breach the space between the human and the non-human. Aided by the old women who have woven all these tales and encounters, which have become entangled in pieces of cotton that once protected their daughters, granddaughters, companions and friends.

New, non-anthropocentric models of coexistence are imagined from the transformations of ecosystems and the connections between organisms. Maya Pita-Romero's work explores new imaginaries and forms of care that conceal creatures that rethink contemporary relationships. The organic elements and biomaterials she uses to construct her works change, ferment and decompose over time.
