CAVALRY VS. PANZER: HISTORY IN VIDEOGAMES
Date
10 June 2011
Venue
Nave 17. Nave una
Programme
Intermediae
Since 2009 ArsGames and Mondo Píxel have been working with Intermediae thanks to a Creation Grant. Since then, together they arrange regular gatherings, set up by the collective ArsGames sometimes, and other times planned by Mondo Pixel, to bring together professionals, artists and aficionados who practice Game Art: research into Game Studies and Game Art Theory.
This time around, Mondo Píxel's Juan Porras analises how history is handled in videogames, the delightful pleasure of uchronie (alternate history) and how sometimes it can dangerous to mess with things that can incense people so much. Chinese tanks in Renaissance Rome or Napoleón marching triumphantly through the streets of London... Can historical rigor be combined with playability? Should it be? Is it better to play to learn about history or to play to change it? Is history a stage or another character in all the action?
