An annual rendezvous with documentary and non-fiction films

In its 19th edition, the Documenta Madrid International Film Festival, promoted by the Madrid City Council, is once again holding its annual rendezvous with
documentary and non-fiction films in collaboration with Cineteca Matadero, Filmoteca Española and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. In this edition, Documenta Madrid is seeking, above all, to engage with the audience, the city and with contemporary creation; furthermore, this edition will provide a stimulus towards the collective audiovisual experience, understood as an active exhibition of essential dialogue between the spectator and the creation; lastly, the festival wants to go beyond the screen, to open and extend the festival to all the people of Madrid and to all film lovers, who, year after year, are loyal followers of this event.

The new section Vaya Panorama, is the result of this search to bring new ways of being in cinemas, of relating to creators, of getting involved in their creative processes, of accompanying them and being an active part of them. This first edition brings together different proposals from collectives, programmers and artists who are introducing new ways of approaching these processes: XFilms from Punto de Vista festival, Terrorismo de Autor, Dentro Cine and Mediadistancia together with Blanca Velasco and Abel Hernández El hijo.

The large number of Spanish documentaries received in the last call for entries has demonstrated the vigour and health of the genre. For this reason, Documenta presents the 1st Documenta Dialogue Forum, a professional meeting place for agents from different areas of creation, production, programming and exhibition, to seek new paths for documentaries to give them a more robust commercial life. Following this lead, there will be meetings and talks on new forms and tools for the creation and production of non-fiction films, organised by the ECAM, the Madrid Film and Audiovisual School.

And all of this will be combined in an ongoing tribute to two figures who emerged from the countercultural and underground scenes, where they have attracted a large number of disciples: Jonas Mekas, whose birth centenary is being celebrated, and Gonzalo García Pelayo, in a year in which he has resumed his frenetic creative career.
