Curated by Agustín Escolano, this exhibition at Casa del Lector looks back over history to show how we have learnt to read and how we have become reader subjects.

The exhibition is divided into five bridges. The first is an invitation to enter the themed land of Alphabet Island. The second sets out a view of learning to read in the modern era, from the invention of the printing press to the Encyclopaedia. The third and fourth show the development of the myth of universal literacy, from the era of revolutions through to the end of the last century. The fifth and final bridge looks at the changes taking place in how reading is learned over recent years, since digital platforms have taken off.

Each of these spaces displays material to help visitors understand the process that both people and society have followed to teach and spread reading as a cultural skill.

Opening ceremony: 9 October at 7pm
