Matadero Multipista
The spotlight will be on contemporary sounds that have emerged in this century beyond the Anglo-American industry, with four double-feature programs taking place over four consecutive Fridays: a relaxed conversation with several experts in the afternoon (at 7:00 p.m.) followed by a DJ session at night (starting at 8:15 p.m.).
The music of the United States and the United Kingdom remains deeply rooted in styles born in the 20th century — from rock and pop to rap and dance music. Meanwhile, major musical revolutions are taking place in other regions of the world, which are also producing some of today’s biggest global stars.
The first session (May 23) will be dedicated to new Latin music. And that means a lot of music! Beneath the commercial success of reggaetón lies a multitude of styles and sensibilities that increasingly blend modern rhythms with traditional ones. Is the Latin music boom just a trend or a consolidated phenomenon still expanding? What impact has the global success of Latin artists had on the world’s perception of Latin American people?
K-pop takes center stage in the second session (May 30). Sparkling pop songs and playful choreography define this global hit-making machine that has taken the world by storm for over a decade, overshadowing even Asia’s cultural powerhouses: China, Japan, and India.
If one genre has dominated the charts in the last decade, it’s urban music, which will be the focus of the third Matadero Multipista session (June 6). This sound, hugely popular among millennials and Gen Z, isn’t just a Spanish phenomenon — it has spread across both shores of the Mediterranean, creating a vast shared musical and cultural space.
The final session (June 13) is devoted to Africa and its rich and diverse musical and cultural traditions. Electronic music, rap, and R&B have flourished across the continent, blending with traditional sounds to create an exhilarating array of local styles — bold, vibrant, and full of character.
With these four sessions of conversation and music, Matadero Multipista celebrates the vitality of today’s most vibrant Latin, African, Asian, and Mediterranean rhythms. Free entry and dancing guaranteed.
Free entry until full capacity is reached.
