Why aren´t there any major female artists? This is the uncomfortable question that art historian Linda Nochlin chose as a title for her notorious essay in 1971.
Why aren´t there any major female artists? This is the uncomfortable question that art historian Linda Nochlin chose as a title for her notorious essay in 1971.

Regardless of Nochlin´s witty title, it lacks a detail that would make it even more incisive: Why are there no great female artists in the official Art History?  This exhibition opens the debate in the district and links it to vindications of International Women´s Day and the Semana del Libro de Usera (Usera´s Book Week), this edition´s main theme being women and literature.
Muerte a los Grandes Relatos (Death to Mainstream Narrative)
reviews Art History from a gender perspective, outlining the need to support a pedagogy that includes women as subject of study and visualises contemporary creation of national women artists, with the intention of deconstructing the Mainstream Narrative that rules our vision of art, spreading other realities still outside the supported by historical powers. Each one revisits the work of these female artists who remained in the shadow of institutional narratives. Also including the proposals of hundreds of women who have taken part through the web in a joint installation.

This exhibition is curated by María Bastarós and supported by Servicio de Igualdad del Ayuntamiento de Zaragoza (city of Zaragoza´s townhall service for equal rights), procuring producer of works in the first edition, and the culture programme of Mirador Usera, in charge of touring.
