Poetas isn’t a poetry festival. Poetas is a poetic festival, that is, an interdisciplinary event for poets, a meeting of artists, a gathering of Poets for the general public. It was born out of the need to make an immense minority aware of everything currently being done in the sphere of poetry, to showcase the word as a whole and everything that surrounds the world of the poetic.
Poetas has a history spanning 10 years, which began one day in arrebato libros, a bookshop in downtown Madrid. Its hypothesis and its conclusions are the certainty that the poetic can be found in many other disciplines, including music, dance, publishing, humour, performance, cooking and photography, which it believes are unquestionably POETRY. With Poetas 2016 the project heads into a new phase which requires an even more interdisciplinary approach, namely greater eclecticism. It will be held on the last weekend in May, Saturday the 28th and Sunday the 29th, which is also the first weekend of the Madrid Book Fair. The festival has entered into a collaboration agreement with the Book Fair that establishes Poetas as an external activity that will be included in the Fair’s promotional campaign. This edition of the festival will take place in a new setting, Matadero Madrid and Casa del Lector, and it will be held completely outdoors. In addition to having changed its name –the poetic festival now calls itself just Poetas– it also boasts a new image. The images, which are created each year by a photographer, are the first poetic piece of the festival. The 2016 edition features poet Alberto García-Alix.
