LAB 5 The Mechanics of Truth

The perception of the world has always been a contested territory. But why has it become so easy—and at the same time so difficult—to believe in what we see? The current proliferation of AI generated content produces hyperrealistic versions of reality: images and narratives so shiny and polished that they end up merging with the desires and fears of those who, faced with a deluge of stimuli, seek to absorb large doses of truth quickly and with minimal effort.

This condition extends far beyond an individual epistemological dilemma. Rather, it signals deep structural shifts, accelerated by unprecedented instruments for representing and understanding the world. The annual program LAB 5 The Mechanics of Truth turns its attention to the technological apparatuses and logics that are redefining the parameters of the real and examines their relationship with new communities, emerging aesthetics, ideological formations, propaganda techniques, and new industrial sectors.

The speed and ubiquity of these transformations are often disorienting, fostering distrust, technophobia, and even paranoia. Yet what other responses are taking shape in this scenario? Do such systems of knowledge production enhance our ability to grasp complexity, or do they instead erode it? Do they amplify voices that were previously marginalized, or do they become subtler instruments of manipulation and control? Can the need to unravel unequivocal fragments of truth coexist with the acceptance of more stratified and complex ways of knowledge production?

What Truth? What Mechanisms?

LAB 5 The Mechanics of Truth brings together creators and researchers from diverse fields to approach these phenomena not merely as symptoms of technological evolution, but as signs of a broader transformation of the public sphere—one that calls for new forms of literacy.

For artists, designers, scientists, technologists, and rebellious ethnographers, the program is conceived as a space for shared inquiry: a place to engage with emerging issues, experiment with creative methods, and test forms of collaboration capable of illuminating patterns and mechanisms that are in continuous transformation.

As a starting point, these are the areas we would like to explore:

Counter-forensic practices under pressure

Contemporary and experimental investigative aesthetics

Axis 2 — Technologies for lying

The instrumentalization and weaponization of synthetic fiction

Prediction markets as a mutating public sphere

Axis 3 — The grey zone: when truth no longer matters

Technoparanoia: the fear of simulation

Digital nihilism (post-irony as “epistemic dispersion”)

Digital technologies as portals to another reality
