Matadero Madrid center for contemporary creation

Capítulo uno (Chapter One) 2023
Capítulo uno defends literature as a compass in times of uncertainty and as a rallying call for a time of its own, a multiplier of experience. In the words of the late Charles Simic, a book is a secret shared. In this way, we enter a realm of diverse and unique stories with which to navigate the dictatorship of polarization from a vantage point of abundance and complexity.
One of the ways in which we intend to embrace this complexity is by opening our eyes to genres that used to be considered marginal, but are now undeniably mainstream, such as science fiction or horror. Another way to embrace this complexity is to resort to the writing of authors who look to the past in search of meaning, or those unafraid of revealing themselves as a revolutionary act in their work.
Authors and artists, chosen on account of their literary relevance, who will present their latest works. We will be party to conversations between disciplines that will address the communication between literature and other artistic practices and create constellations between creators. Writers who are experimenting and subverting genres and courageously tackling themes related to contemporary reality within the framework of hallyu, the Korean wave. and the Capítulo Uno “Festivalito”, aimed at children and young people, which aims to become the leading literary festival for Madrid’s readers of the future.
It is a thoroughly hybrid literary festival that provides a space for myriad points of view and cross-contamination between disciplines -the constituent principle of Matadero Madrid- to provoke encounters between different artistic practices and words. All this and more over the course of four intense days in which, in keeping with the festival’s name, and as a ritual of these days in which literature will be our shared secret, we will invite our guest authors to read the first chapter of their most recent book in their own language.
